Basketball Recap: Tuesday's Loss Ends Southern Lee's Winning Streak

It was fun while it lasted, but Southern Lee's undefeated season came to an end after 13 games on Tuesday. They fell to the Union Pines Vikings 77-71. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Cavaliers came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 64th, while the Vikings are ranked 248th).

Union Pines had a senior duo take command as Jaylen Kyle went 6 of 14 en route to 19 points and three steals and Aiden Leonard posted 17 points and five boards. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Leonard has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Kolby Scruton, who went 5 for 11 on his way to 11 points.

Having lost for the first time this season, Southern Lee fell to 13-1. As for Union Pines, they have been performing well recently as they've won eight of their last ten games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-5 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Southern Lee will head out to take on Lee County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Southern Lee is facing Lee County at the right time seeing as Lee County is stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for Union Pines, they are taking a road trip to face off against Pinecrest at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Pinecrest knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past four contests -- so hopefully Union Pines likes a good challenge.
