After flying high against the Shorecrest Prep Chargers last Wednesday, the Braden River Pirates came back down to earth. Braden River took a 53-38 bruising from Winthrop College Prep Academy on Thursday. Braden River was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Winthrop College Prep Academy apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2023.
JoLesa Birkhead was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 26 points and 14 steals for Winthrop College Prep Academy. That makes it nine consecutive games in which Birkhead has scored at least a third of Winthrop College Prep Academy's points. Another player making a difference was Zamyria King, who scored 14 points along with seven steals.
Braden River has not been sharp recently, as they've lost six of their last eight games, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-10 record this season. As for Winthrop College Prep Academy, their victory bumped their record up to 8-10.
Braden River will be playing at home against Lakewood Ranch at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Winthrop College Prep Academy won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Sarasota Christian at 10:00 a.m. on January 19th. Sarasota Christian is hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses.
