Week 9 Small-School Player of the Week
Matt Mitchell, Sallisaw – Yes, Sallisaw is for real. The Black Diamonds needed a benchmark victory as they headed into the postseason and picked it up with a 37-14 victory over Wagoner. Mitchell led the effort with 205 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries.
For the season, Mitchell has rushed for 1,179 yards and 16 touchdowns. Junior quarterback Matt Oberste is considered one of the top prospects from the state of Oklahoma in the Class of 2010.
With Mitchell and Oberste in the lineup, Sallisaw is a team to keep an eye on in November.

Week 9 Storylines
Morrison Streak Ends, Woodland Rises
It had to end sometime. Morrison’s 47-game win-streak was snapped by a strong Woodland squad, 27-0. Was it an upset, or is Woodland one of the top teams in Class A this season?
Woodland had been in the top four in the state the entire season following losses in Class A to top-ranked Okeene and Tonkawa by a total of eight points. Okeene, the defending Class A champion, is No. 1 in Class A this week while Tonkawa slipped to fifth due to its loss two weeks ago to Morrison in order to make room for Woodland.
Woodland turned up the defense in the win over Morrison, who won 39 straight games in eight-man before moving up to 11-man this season. The Cougars held Morrison signal caller Shawn Walls to 25 rushing yards and intercepted the All-State contender twice.
Woodland and Morrison have arguably the toughest district anywhere in any classification in Oklahoma. Joining Woodland and Morrison are No. 5 Tonkawa, Hominy, and Pawnee.
Tonkawa, led by sophomore running back Jake Love, has the inside track to the district championship with a 7-1 record and 86 district points. With a win over 2-7 Liberty on Friday night, Tonkawa wraps up the district title. Woodland and Morrison both enter this final week of regular season competition with 7-1 records, with Morrison owning 75 district points to Woodland’s 72.
A huge battle will take place for fourth place in the district. Haskell and Hominy enter Friday night’s head-to-head encounter tied at 5-3 in district play with the winner heading to the postseason. Hominy’s three losses have come to the top three teams in the district, including losing to Morrison and Woodland by a total of eight points.
0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0 For Glenpool
Over the past two seasons, much has been made over the impressive defensive performances by Bishop McGuinness and Guthrie. McGuinness posted 16 shutouts in winning Class 4A state titles in 2006 and 2007, while Guthrie won the Class 5A state title in 2007 behind a stout defense that posted eight shutouts.
Glenpool’s start to the 2008 season might top them all. The top-ranked team in Class 4A is currently standing at 9-0 on the season and has allowed seven points the entire season. Those seven points came in a 42-7 win over Seminole in Week 4. The Warriors even posted a shutout over last year’s Class 5A runner-up Bixby. That makes eight shutouts this season, including five straight.
This week presents a huge challenge for Glenpool in a battle against Star Spencer to decide the District 4A-3 title. Star Spencer is filled with offensive firepower all over the field and has enough talent to present problems for the Warriors.
