The University Hawks will challenge the Jefferson Cougars at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. University is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season.
University heads in on the heels of a playoff matchup on Friday. They fell just short of Cabell Midland by a score of 6-5. The Hawks haven't had much luck with the Knights recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.
Maddie Campbell put in work while hitting and pitching. She tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. Campbell was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Campbell wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Olivia Masoner, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one RBI. Kelsey Park was another, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one double.
Meanwhile, Jefferson narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past St. Albans 6-5.
Like University, Jefferson also got a great game from a two-way player: Becca Munslow. On the mound, she tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off three hits. Munslow was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with one stolen base and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Graclyn Dodson, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Ainsley Phillips, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Jefferson has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 23-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.4 runs over those games. As for University, their loss dropped their record down to 25-6-1.
Saturday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. University hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .369. However, it's not like Jefferson struggles in that department as they've averaged .348. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
University was able to grind out a solid win over Jefferson in their previous meeting on Friday, winning 11-8. Will the Hawks repeat their success, or do the Cougars have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
