After flying high against the Patuxent Panthers last Wednesday, the Westlake Wolverines came back down to earth. Westlake fell to McDonough 61-57. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Westlake lost on Wednesday despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Jagan Thomas, who scored eight points along with five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Ethan Relf, who scored ten points.
Even though they lost, Westlake smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as McDonough only pulled down five offensive rebounds.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead McDonough to victory, but perhaps none more so than Mekhai Johnson, who scored 15 points along with three steals. Johnson hasn't dropped below two steals for three straight games. Tyrik Petway was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with five assists and two steals.
Westlake's loss dropped their record down to 5-8. As for McDonough, the victory (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 13-2.
Westlake on the road again on Friday and play against Chopticon at 6:30 p.m. on January 26th. Chopticon will be looking to keep their five-game home win streak alive. McDonough will take on Huntingtown at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Huntingtown will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Maryland Rankings (they are ranked 203rd, while McDonough is ranked 65th).
