Charlestown (Mass.) head coach Edson Cardoso confirmed that
Akosa Maduegbunam, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound guard, has given a verbal commitment to Penn State.
Maduegbunam averaged 22 points and eight rebounds per game as a junior at Charlestown, leading the perennial Boston-area power to a 20-3 record.
"He is a tremendous shooter, very athletic and plays very good defense," Cardoso said of Maduegbunam. "He is also a great rebounder for a guard."
New Penn State head coach Pat Chambers initially offered Maduegbunam while at Boston University.
"It just worked out that he (Chambers) still had interest and felt excited about bringing him in to play at a high level in the Big 10," Cardoso said.
Unfortunately for Cardoso, he won't have the future Nittany Lions' services next year at Charlestown. Maduegbunam is transferring to
Winchendon Prep (Mass.) to play as a senior.
"It was my idea to move him on to Winchendon," Cardoso said. "He gave us a solid two years and this will give him a chance to play against the best in New England and the United States."
The Townies still have some high-level talent on the roster with 6-2 guard
Rony Fernandes, who is receiving a strong push from Charlotte and will likely make a decision by the end of the summer, according to Cardoso.
