The Mount Desert Island Trojans will venture away from home to challenge the Old Town Coyotes at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Mount Desert Island was handed a heart-breaking two-run loss in their last match, but they sure didn't let that happen against John Bapst Memorial on Thursday. The Trojans put the hurt on the Crusaders with a sharp 17-10 victory. With that win, the Trojans brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.
Cate Brown was a standout: she went 3-for-5 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season. Alli Horner was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Mount Desert Island kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.4 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 9.2.
Meanwhile, Old Town entered their tilt with Presque Isle on Monday with six consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with seven. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Wildcats an 8-0 shutout.
Molly Albert was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Ava Brasslett was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Natalie Fournier, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one double.
Old Town's victory was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-3. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.1 runs over those games. As for Mount Desert Island, their victory ended a four-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 6-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Mount Desert Island has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.7 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Old Town struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Mount Desert Island came out on top in a nail-biter against Old Town in their previous meeting on May 3rd, sneaking past 7-6. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Trojans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
