The Burke County Bears waltzed into their game Saturday with two straight wins but they left with three. They pulled ahead with a 34-33 photo finish over Screven County. The win was all the more spectacular given Burke County's disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 365th, while Screven County is ranked 161st).
When it comes to explaining why Screven County lost, one person who can't be blamed is Alailah Scott. Despite the final result, she scored 18 points along with six rebounds and four steals. Jaliah Roberts was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with five steals.
Burke County's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-7. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 55.3 points per game. As for Screven County, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 9-3.
Burke County will head out on the road to face off against New Hampstead at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Screven County and Woodville-Tompkins will face off at 6:00 p.m. on January 9th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Hopefully Woodville-Tompkins focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up eight last Friday.
