The Columbiana Clippers will head out on the road to take on the Howland Tigers at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Columbiana is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.7 runs per game this season.
Howland will be up against a hot Columbiana team: the squad just extended their winning streak to three. The Clippers came out on top against David Anderson by a score of 8-5 on Wednesday.
Nick Klindworth looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off three hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Avery Young was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Ethan Lehnerd, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Columbiana was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .351 or higher in three consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Howland made easy work of Salem on Monday and carried off a 14-1 victory. The Tigers have beaten the Quakers the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Quakers has come to flipping the script.
Steven Bubon tossed a big game, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and only one walk). He has become a key player for Howland: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 1-3 otherwise.
At the plate, Dominic Santee and Keaton Perry did most of the damage at the plate: Santee scored three runs while going 2-for-3, while Perry went 3-for-4 with five RBI, one run, and one double. Santee is becoming a predictor of Howland's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 0-3 when he doesn't). Bode Biggin also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Howland's record now sits at 3-4. As for Columbiana, they now have a winning record of 4-3.
Columbiana's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's contest. The Clippers have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Howland, though, as they've been averaging only 0.7 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Columbiana continue to outrun the ball?
Columbiana couldn't quite get it done against Howland in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 as they fell 5-0. Can the Clippers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
