Baseball Recap: Northwestern Has No Trouble Against Bladensburg

Northwestern was handed a heart-breaking two-run loss in their last match, but they sure didn't let that happen against Bladensburg on Tuesday. The Wildcats blew past the Mustangs 8-2. The Wildcats haven't had any issues with the Mustangs recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive win against them.

Alberto Weaver and Elijah Miller made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Weaver kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 12 over four innings pitched. Meanwhile, Miller struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run but no hits. Weaver is becoming a predictor of Northwestern's success: when he posts at least eight strikeouts the team is 2-1 (and 2-6 when he doesn't). At bat, Weaver got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run, while Miller went 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. That's the most RBI Weaver has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Carter Williams, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one RBI. Northwestern is undefeated when Williams posts two or more runs, but 1-7 otherwise. Alvin Sammy was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one triple and two RBI.

Northwestern's victory bumped their record up to 4-7. As for Bladensburg, they are on a 31-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-6.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Northwestern will face off against Eleanor Roosevelt at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Wildcats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Raiders have averaged an impressive 7.5 runs per game this season. As for Bladensburg, they will challenge High Point at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
