Guy-Perkins is 0-9 against St. Joseph since April of 2017 but things could change on Monday. The Thunderbirds will face off against the Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m. Guy-Perkins has given up an average of 10.3 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
It was a Battle of the Birds when Guy-Perkins took on Mayflower on Friday. The Thunderbirds lost 19-4 to the Eagles. The Thunderbirds have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Guy-Perkins saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Owen Glover, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for St. Joseph, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Thursday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Nemo Vista an 8-0 shutout on Friday. Considering the Bulldogs have won eight contests by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Not much got past Trevor Jackson, who gave up just three hits and racked up nine Ks to keep Nemo Vista off the board. Jackson has been consistent : he hasn't given up a single earned run in six consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, St. Joseph let Owen Coney and Xavier Stobaugh run wild. Coney went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Stobaugh scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Stobaugh also put up a double, which was his first of the season. George Heer was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.
St. Joseph's win was their 15th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-2. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.4 runs over those games. As for Guy-Perkins, they now have a losing record of 4-5.
Monday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Guy-Perkins has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .502. However, it's not like St. Joseph struggles in that department as they've averaged .560. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Guy-Perkins might still be hurting after the 15-0 loss they got from St. Joseph when the teams last played back in March. Can the Thunderbirds avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
