The Southside Seahawks suffered their biggest loss since December 8, 2023 on Friday. They were dealt a 72-42 loss at the hands of East Carteret. While losing is never fun, Southside can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 612th, while East Carteret is ranked 207th).
When it comes to explaining why Southside lost, one person who can't be blamed is Joshua Armstrong. Despite the final result, he scored 26 points. That was a full 61.9% of Southside's points, marking the fourth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Jeremiah Satchell, who scored ten points.
East Carteret had a senior duo take command as Charles Matheka scored 32 points along with five assists and five rebounds and Shamel Baker scored 24 points along with three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Matheka has scored all season. Jayedon Watson was another key contributor, scoring six points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Southside's defeat dropped their record down to 3-13. As for East Carteret, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 10-7.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Southside will stay at home for another game and welcome Jones at 7:30 p.m. on January 23rd. Jones is coming into the game on a four-game losing streak. As for East Carteret, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Lejeune at 8:00 p.m. Lejeune is hoping to put an end to a five-game streak of away losses.
