The Durango Trailblazers will head out on the road to challenge the Canyon Springs Pioneers at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Durango has now lost nine straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 27.
Durango pushed their score all the way to 59 on Thursday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 63-59 hit to the loss column at the hands of Centennial.
Durango's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Drake Afe-Passion, who scored 18 points along with two steals, and Andrew Chavez who scored ten points along with six rebounds. Afe-Passion hasn't dropped below 15points for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Treyvion Mitchell, who scored two points along with nine rebounds.
Meanwhile, Canyon Springs' recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Monday after their third straight loss. They took a 69-51 bruising from Cimarron-Memorial. That's two games in a row now that Canyon Springs has lost by exactly 18 points.
Loss or not, Canyon Springs got some senior leadership from Kion Thomas and Emanuel Custard. Thomas scored 16 points along with five rebounds, while Custard. scored ten points. That's the first time this season that Thomas scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Armondo Lewis Jr, who scored five points.
Durango has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost ten of their last 11 matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-16 record this season. As for Canyon Springs, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-12.
Everything came up roses for Durango against Canyon Springs in their previous matchup back in January of 2023 as the squad secured a 74-39 victory. Will Durango repeat their success, or does Canyon Springs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
