Baseball Recap: Deckerville Has No Trouble Against Akron-Fairgrove

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Mayville, Deckerville was happy to have turned things around on Monday. They put the hurt on the Akron-Fairgrove Vikings with a sharp 16-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Eagles, who have now won four matchups by six runs or more so far this season.

Evan Benjey made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out seven batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Deckerville is 3-1 when Benjey allows two or fewer earned runs, but 2-3-1 otherwise. Benjey was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Brandon Salowitz, who went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Deckerville's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-0-1 (and 2-4 when he doesn't). Trenton Garza was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.

Deckerville now has a winning record of 5-4-1. As for Akron-Fairgrove, their loss was their 13th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-12.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Deckerville will host Kingston at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Akron-Fairgrove, they will welcome Carsonville-Port Sanilac at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
