The Memphis East Mustangs will take on the Memphis Central Warriors at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Memphis East has struggled recently with six losses in a row, while Memphis Central will arrive with eight straight victories.
Memphis East lost 12-4 to Cordova on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Memphis Central hadn't done well against Overton recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Warriors blew past the Wolverines 13-5. The Warriors might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matches by seven runs or more this season.
Joshua Thurmon made a splash no matter where he played. He pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
In other pitching news, Evan Nelson tossed a big game, pitching six innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits.
Back at the plate, Memphis Central let Jayden Cole and Joshua Hollowell run wild. Cole scored two runs and stole three bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances, while Hollowell scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. That's the most hits Hollowell has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Beiker Leon, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.
Memphis Central kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Overton only managed six hits.
Memphis Central pushed their record up to 13-3 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.2 runs over those games. As for Memphis East, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-7.
Memphis East suffered a grim 15-0 defeat to Memphis Central in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Mustangs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
