Baseball Recap: Montour Snags Seventh Win in Last Eight Games

Montour came out on top against Ellwood City on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive eight-run first inning. The Spartans were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over the Wolverine. The Spartans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven matchups by six runs or more this season.

Cyprian Slifkey looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one hit in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Matteo Weber, who went 2-for-3 with three runs and one stolen base. He has become a key player for Montour: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 5-7 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Zachary Ciamacco, who got on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

Montour always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .516. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Ellwood City only posted an OBP of .350.

Montour has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-7 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Ellwood City, their defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 14-5.

Montour didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 6-2 loss against Central Catholic on the 7th. As for Ellwood City, they will face off against Seton LaSalle at 7:00 p.m. on the 13th. The Wolverine's pitchers better be ready for this one: the Rebels have averaged an impressive 6.6 runs per game this season.
