Sunnyside and Marana are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2018, but likely not for long. The Blue Devils will be playing in front of their home fans against the Tigers at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Sunnyside is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.3 runs per game this season.
Marana will be up against a hot Sunnyside squad: the team just extended their winning streak to three. The Blue Devils never let Tucson High Magnet School get on the board and left with a 4-0 win on Thursday. The game was the first time the Blue Devils have beaten the Badgers on their field since February 24, 2023.
SABINO GONZALEZ made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over seven innings pitched. GONZALEZ was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 1-for-2. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, LUCAS MATA was excellent, scoring a run while going 3-for-3. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of MICHEL MUNIZ, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Marana faced off against Desert Ridge on Friday. The Tigers won by a run and slipped past the Jaguars 5-4. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Tigers.
Brandon Collings tossed a big game, tossing six innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Marana is 2-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 6-12 otherwise.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Connor Ellis, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. He is becoming a predictor of Marana's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 5-13 when he doesn't). Cody Johnson was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
Marana's victory bumped their record up to 8-13. As for Sunnyside, their win bumped their record up to 13-8.
Sunnyside was able to grind out a solid victory over Marana in their previous meeting last Thursday, winning 8-3. Will the Blue Devils repeat their success, or do the Tigers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
