Northeastern is a perfect 10-0 against Pasquotank County since January of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Eagles will host the Panthers at 7:30 p.m. Northeastern knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past five games -- so hopefully Pasquotank County likes a good challenge.
Northeastern is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering Martin County just ended the team's six-game winning streak on Tuesday. They took a 63-55 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Gators. While the Eagles didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Gators 16-7 in the first quarter.
Despite their defeat, Northeastern saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Z'Kobe Whidbee, who posted 13 points, was perhaps the best of all. The team also got some help courtesy of Kylen Moore, who had 17 points.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Pasquotank County). They enjoyed a cozy 89-72 win over Currituck County on Tuesday. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Panthers as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Pasquotank County had a senior duo take command as Branden Smith shot 71% from the field to rack up 30 points and Datravion Simpson went 10-for-15 en route to 22 points and four steals. That makes it four consecutive games in which Smith has scored at least a third of the Panthers' points. Jayon Harris was another key player, shooting 55% from the field on his way to 14 points and three steals.
Pasquotank County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. They are 9-1 when they hit their own glass that hard.
Pasquotank County's win bumped their record up to 14-7. As for Northeastern, their loss dropped their record down to 15-3.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Northeastern has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 22.9 boards per game. However, it's not like Pasquotank County struggles in that department as they've been averaging 34.8 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Northeastern didn't have too much breathing room in their matchup against Pasquotank County in their previous meeting back in January, but they still walked away with a 51-46 victory. Do the Eagles have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Panthers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
