See the Marist hitter blast away for the No. 5 RedHawks.
The theme of 2017 has to be turmoil. The favorites in each of last weekend's high-profile tournaments fell and, as a result, this week's MaxPreps Xcellent Top 25 National High School Volleyball Rankings presented by the Army National Guard is again jumbled. There is a new, but old, No. 1 and six other teams have joined the rankings for the first time this season.
Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), which was ranked No. 15 a week ago, captured the 74-team Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix. In doing so, the Monarchs knocked off Walton (Marietta, Ga.), last week's No. 1, in the finals and blanked Top 25 teams Oviedo (Fla.) and Xavier College Prep (Phoenix) as well as four other teams.
Mater Dei's front row of
Meg Brown,
Kristina Pepek,
Natalie Berty and
Maddy Seybold gave setter
Mia Tuaniga plenty to work with and the Monarchs have won seven straight, including four against Top 25 teams.
In the ASICS Tournament in Chicago, Marist represented the Windy City impressively going unbeaten and beating No. 7 Assumption (Louisville, Ky.). Marist has won 14 straight behind the play of setter Molly Murrihy and hitters
Savannah Thompson and
Maggie Meyer.
Marist and Marian (Omaha, Neb.) were the biggest movers this week, each jumping eight spots. Mater Dei and The Woodlands (Texas) each moved up seven spots. The Woodlands has won 19 in a row.
Reagan (San Antonio) regained the Xcellent 25 top spot it lost three weeks ago and has now won 15 in a row. The Rattlers are 34-1.
Dorman (Roebuck, S.C.) lost for the first time in 48 matches and fell from the No. 2 spot.
The top six teams each have one loss and that has six unbeaten Top 25 teams screaming "keep an eye on us."
Corona del Sol (Tempe, Ariz.) dropped seven spots, but beat previously unbeaten Oviedo and Baylor (Chattanooga, Tenn.).
Nike third-place finisher Xavier College Prep joins the Top 25 this week along with unbeatens Monte Vista (Danville, Calif.), RHAM (Conn.) and West Orange (Winter Garden, Fla.). Rouse (Leander, Tex.) and Notre Dame Prep (Pontiac, Mich.) also join the Top 25.
Unbeatens Monte Vista, West Orange and RHAM have combined to win 124 of 130 sets this season. RHAM is perfect in three dozen sets, while Notre Dame Prep has reeled off 30 straight and Rouse is riding a 22-game win streak.
