The Irwin County Indians will head out on the road to take on the Cook Hornets at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Irwin County is hoping to put an end to a six-game streak of away losses.
Last Tuesday, Irwin County lost to Lanier County on the road by a decisive 58-40 margin. While losing is never fun, Irwin County can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 509th, while Lanier County is ranked 239th).
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Jaylen Martin, who scored 13 points along with six rebounds and three steals. He has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last seven times he's played. Javion Woodard was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Even though Cook has not done well against Sumter County recently (they were 0-7 in their previous seven matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Saturday. Cook slipped by Sumter County 49-48. The win was some much needed relief for Cook as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Cook's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Ny'shaun Wallace, who scored ten points, and Keshun McKever, who scored ten points.
Irwin County has not been sharp recently, as they've lost 11 of their last 12 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-14 record this season. As for Cook, their win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 7-10.
Irwin County came up short against Cook in their previous meeting back in December of 2023, falling 47-36. Can Irwin County avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
