The Harlingen Cardinals will be playing in front of their home fans against the Weslaco Panthers at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Harlingen has 22 straight victories, Weslaco has four straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Harlingen posted their closest victory yet this season on Friday. They had just enough and edged Los Fresnos out 80-78. Given Harlingen's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 139th, while Los Fresnos is ranked 351st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Among those leading the charge was Andrew Galdamez, who scored 26 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points he has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Luis Rodriguez, who scored 13 points.
Meanwhile, Weslaco came up short against Hanna on Wednesday and fell 52-44.
Harlingen pushed their record up to 27-3 with that victory, which was their fifth straight at home. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 68.8 points per game. As for Weslaco, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost eight of their last nine games, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-16 record this season.
Harlingen skirted past Weslaco 48-45 in their previous matchup back in December of 2023. Does Harlingen have another victory up their sleeve, or will Weslaco turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
