Basketball Game Preview: West Las Vegas Dons vs. Academy for Technology and The Classics

The West Las Vegas Dons are taking a road trip to face off against Academy for Technology and The Classics at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (West Las Vegas has three straight victories, Academy for Technology and The Classics has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the court.

Last Tuesday, West Las Vegas didn't have too much trouble with St. Michael's as they won 56-39. Given the Dons' advantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 20th, while the Horsemen are ranked 87th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead West Las Vegas to victory, but perhaps none more so than Shiann Montoya, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds. The dominant performance gave Montoya a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Alexis Pacheco, who posted 14 points and six boards.

Meanwhile, Academy for Technology and The Classics was beaten by Santa Fe Indian 55-12 on Wednesday. The contest marked Academy for Technology and The Classics' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

West Las Vegas' win was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 16-4. Those victories came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 28.8 points per game. As for Academy for Technology and The Classics, their loss dropped their record down to 4-14.

Everything came up roses for West Las Vegas against Academy for Technology and The Classics when the teams last played back in November of 2023, as the squad secured a 56-20 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for West Las Vegas since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
