The Declo Hornets will face off against the Wood River Wolverines at 10:00 a.m. on Friday. Declo has given up an average of 12.3 runs per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Declo is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They came up short against Firth on Monday, falling 22-12. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Hornets have suffered against the Cougars since April 17, 2019.
Teagan Wickel was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with one home run, seven RBI, and one double. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Claire Wilson, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Meanwhile, Wood River fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Skyline on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Grizzlies by a score of 11-9. The Wolverines just can't catch a break and have now endured three losses in a row.
Hadley Elsbree made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went a perfect 4-for-4 with three stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Naomi Gorringe, who went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one triple.
Wood River's defeat dropped their record down to 2-5. As for Declo, their loss dropped their record down to 1-5.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Friday as neither team is afraid to steal. Declo has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Wood River struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.4 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Declo suffered a grim 14-4 defeat to Wood River when the teams last played back in April of 2023. Can the Hornets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
