Basketball Recap: Sierra Johnson's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Summit Academy over Kearns

Summit Academy was the 55-43 winner over Kearns when they last played one another back in December of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The Summit Academy Bears took a 46-37 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Kearns Cougars on Saturday. The Bears have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Summit Academy lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Sierra Johnson, who went 7 for 17 on her way to 15 points and eight rebounds. The dominant performance gave Johnson a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Reagan Morgan, who posted ten points in addition to six boards and five assists.

Even though they lost, Summit Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive rebound total in four consecutive matchups.

Kearns got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Ava Tupou out in front who put up 16 points. Tupou is also crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Mina Kinikini, who had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Summit Academy's loss dropped their record down to 3-7. As for Kearns, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-6.

Summit Academy didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 39-38 defeat against Hillcrest on the 30th. As for Kearns, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 40-37 victory against Juan Diego Catholic on the 30th.
