The La Joya Coyotes will square off against the Weslaco Panthers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as La Joya comes in on three and Weslaco on six.
Last Tuesday, La Joya didn't have too much trouble with Pharr-San Juan-Alamo as they won 65-47. The Coyotes pushed the score to 55-30 by the end of the third, a deficit the Bears cut but never quite recovered from.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead La Joya to victory, but perhaps none more so than Aydin Wilder-Bey, who went 6 of 10 on his way to 15 points and six rebounds. That's the most points Wilder-Bey has posted since back in December of 2024. Tito Garcia was another key player, putting up three points along with ten steals and five assists.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Weslaco challenged Economedes on Tuesday. Weslaco claimed a resounding 72-20 victory over Economedes. The Panthers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 11 matches by 20 points or more this season.
La Joya better keep an eye on Pete Cantu. He was instrumental in Weslaco's win, as he made all 6 shots he took racking up 12 points in addition to five assists and five boards. The team also got some help courtesy of JD Martinez, who posted 11 points.
Weslaco was working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Economedes only racked up four assists.
La Joya has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 14-19 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.0 points per game. As for Weslaco, their win bumped their record up to 23-8.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: La Joya has been crashing the rebounds this season, having averaged 25.4 boards per game. However, it's not like Weslaco struggles in that department as they've been averaging 26.9 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
La Joya ended up a good deal behind Weslaco in their previous meeting back in January, losing 57-39. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Cantu, who went 8 for 10 en route to 23 points and seven boards. Now that La Joya knows the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
