Basketball Recap: Maize South Takes a Loss

Maize South scored the most points they've had this season on Tuesday, but it wasn't enough. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 55-54 to the Valley Center Hornets. The Mavericks just can't catch a break and have now endured three defeats in a row.

Valley Center can attribute much of their success to Austin Saner, who went 5 of 10 on his way to 17 points. Saner is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last five games he's played dating back to last season. Corben Burgess was another key player, putting up four points along with five rebounds and three steals.

Maize South's loss dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Valley Center, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 3-0.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Maize South will take on Derby in a holiday battle at at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Valley Center and South will compete for holiday cheer at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Valley Center knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past three contests -- so hopefully South likes a good challenge.
