Baker is 10-0 against Bryant since December of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Baker Hornets will head out on the road to square off against the Bryant Hurricanes at 7:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Baker has four straight victories, Bryant has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Last Tuesday, Baker faced Mary G. Montgomery in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Baker snuck past Mary G. Montgomery with a 64-59 win. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Baker's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Desmond Williams led the charge by scoring 13 points along with six assists and two steals. Another player making a difference was Derrick Florence lll, who scored 17 points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Bryant suffered their biggest defeat since November 18, 2023 on Friday. They were beaten by Mary G. Montgomery 59-30. While losing is never fun, Bryant can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Alabama basketball rankings (they are ranked 352nd, while Mary G. Montgomery is ranked 22nd).
Baker pushed their record up to 20-7 with that victory, which was their sixth straight at home. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 70.2 points per game. As for Bryant, their loss dropped their record down to 2-15.
Everything came up roses for Baker against Bryant in their previous matchup on January 9th as the squad secured a 84-26 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Baker since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
