Pinnacle (Phoenix, Ariz.) had its advantage, which at one point stood at 12 points, drop to five before the final whistle blew on a 29-24 victory over
Mountain Ridge (Glendale, Ariz.).
After taking the lead on a touchdown run by
Treshawn Favors, the Mountain Lions went into halftime with a 17-15 lead. The Pioneers took the lead for good with a passing touchdown in the third quarter.
Pinnacle's standout player in the win was
Josh Hoekstra. The junior running back ran for one touchdown. He has now scored 12 touchdowns on the season.
Mountain Ridge's
Pono Ayers played well. The senior quarterback threw two touchdowns.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 22-20 win for PHS.
The victory was a step in the right direction for the Phoenix school, which was coming off a 43-31 defeat at the hands of Mountain View in its previous game. The loss comes after Mountain Ridge defeated Boulder Creek 37-14 last week. The loss snapped MR's 2-game winning streak.
Pinnacle (6-1) goes up against Boulder Creek in a I Section III game matchup next week, while Mountain Ridge (3-4) locks horns with O'Connor also in a I Section III game.
