Woodside hasn't had much luck against Grassfield recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Wolverines will host the Grizzlies at 1:00 p.m. Woodside is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.6 runs per game this season.
Woodside took a loss when they played away from home on Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Thursday. They had just enough and edged out Denbigh 9-8. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Wolverines have posted since March 21, 2024.

Shaquan Patrick was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. He has become a key player for Woodside: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 2-5 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Richard Jones, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one double.
Meanwhile, Grassfield had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Thursday. They were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over the Warriors. That's two games straight that the Grizzlies have won by exactly ten runs.
Giacomo Franco made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits over 5.2 innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Grassfield let Cayden McBride and BJ McIntyre run wild. McBride went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run, while McIntyre went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one double. That double was McIntyre's first of the season. Josh Nelson was another key player, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.
Grassfield kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.2 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 9.4.
Grassfield pushed their record up to 8-5 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.7 runs over those games. As for Woodside, the victory got them back to even at 5-5.
Woodside might still be hurting after the 10-0 defeat they got from Grassfield in their previous matchup back in May of 2016. Will the Wolverines have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more baseball content.
