The Asheboro Blue Comets fought the good fight in their overtime match against the Providence Grove Patriots on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Patriots by a score of 71-68. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Asheboro's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ellen Long, who scored 14 points along with 7 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Kimry Comer, who scored 18 points along with 7 rebounds.
Leading Providence Grove to victory were LAUREL BERNHARDT and BROOKE INGRAM. BERNHARDT scored 19 points along with 5 rebounds, while INGRAM scored 18 points along with 6 rebounds. That makes it two consecutive games in which INGRAM has scored at least 25% of Providence Grove's points. JADA NIXON was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
This is the second loss in a row for Asheboro and nudges their season record down to 0-2. As for Providence Grove, the victory got them back to even at 1-1.
Asheboro will face off against Ashe County at 11:30 a.m. on Friday. As for Providence Grove, they will face off against Lexington at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
