The Mountain View Mavericks will square off against the Highland Rams at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Mountain View is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.1 runs per game this season.
Mountain View is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Idaho's top teams: Capital, who was ranked 22nd at the time (Mountain View was ranked fourth). Mountain View fell 9-4 to Capital on Tuesday. The Mavericks' defeat signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.
Owen Perry was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run over 5.2 innings pitched.
At the plate, Tav Hiaring and Cooper Schneidt did some serious damage despite the final result: Hiaring went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI, while Schneidt went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and two RBI. That home run marked the first that Hiaring launched this season.
Meanwhile, Highland owes their pitching crew a big pat on the back after their performance on Saturday. They won by a run and slipped past Centennial 1-0. The one-run effort marked the Rams' lowest-scoring game of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
Garrett Grayson looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched.
On the hitting side, Highland saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mason Payne, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Highland's win was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 3-5. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.4 runs over those games. As for Mountain View, their loss dropped their record down to 6-3.
Highland's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Mountain View has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .434. It's a different story for Highland, though, as they've only averaged .353. Will they be able to contain Mountain View's hitters?
Mountain View skirted past Highland 9-8 in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for Mountain View since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
