The Springfield Longhorns suffered their biggest defeat yet this season on Thursday. They were beaten by McClave 56-27. Springfield has not had much luck with McClave recently, as the team's come up short the last four times they've met.
Springfield's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Madison Varando, who scored ten points along with six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Jaylee Mort, who scored no points along with five rebounds and five blocks.
McClave found their leader in underclassman Abrielle Gomez, who scored 15 points along with seven steals and six assists. Gomez has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Ashlynn Steinbrunn, who scored nine points along with 11 rebounds and six steals.
Springfield has not been sharp recently, as they've lost four of their last five matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-4 record this season. As for McClave, the win for they keeps them at an undefeated 9-0.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Springfield won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Primero at 2:00 p.m. on January 12th. Hopefully Primero focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 22 back in December of 2023. As for McClave, they will look to defend their home court on Saturday against Peyton at 2:30 p.m.
