Two dominant signal callers in Crayton Sapp and Acyn Hansen are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Sequoyah Indians will head out to square off against the Jones Longhorns at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Sequoyah is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They blew past Bethel, posting a 57-6 victory. Given the Indians' advantage in MaxPreps' Oklahoma football rankings (they are ranked 25th, while the Wildcats are ranked 126th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.
Sequoyah found their leader in sophomore Ridge Blackbear, who rushed for 124 yards and three TDs on only 11 carries. Blackbear's longest rush was for an impressive 55 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. The team also got some help courtesy of Hudson Hendricks, who rushed for ten yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Special teams played a big role in the game for Sequoyah, adding 13 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Hendricks, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.
Sequoyah didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Lawson Morgan, Eli Vance, Aidan Cochran, and Bam Timmons picked up one apiece.
Meanwhile, Jones put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They blew past Little Axe 59-14. With the Longhorns ahead 46-0 at the half, the game was all but over already.
Jones' win came from a few key players Sequoyah will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Carlos Hardeman, who picked up 136 receiving yards and three scores. Those three receiving touchdowns gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Hunter Purvis, who picked up 95 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.
Sequoyah's win bumped their record up to 10-1. As for Jones, their victory bumped their record up to 11-0.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Sequoyah has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 204.2 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Jones struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 241.9 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Sequoyah was taken down by Jones 42-6 in their previous matchup back in November of 2017. Thankfully for the Indians, Jd Head (who threw for 331 yards and four touchdowns while completing 80.6% of his passes) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
