The Blackville-Hilda Fighting Hawks will head out on the road to challenge the Wagener-Salley War Eagles at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both teams have had a bumpy ride up to this point with six consecutive losses for Blackville-Hilda and 15 for Wagener-Salley.
Last Tuesday, Blackville-Hilda was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 51-47 to Ridge Spring-Monetta.
Blackville-Hilda's loss came about despite a quality game from Jaquel Holman, who scored 17 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. That's the first time this season that Holman pulled down eight or more rebounds. Another player making a difference was Arkel Thomas, who scored seven points along with four steals.
Wagener-Salley suffered their biggest defeat since December 5, 2023 on Thursday. They took a serious blow against North, falling 93-46. While losing is never fun, Wagener-Salley can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 311th, while North is ranked 67th).
Blackville-Hilda dropped their record down to 4-10 with that defeat, which was their fourth straight at home. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 55.3 points per game. As for Wagener-Salley, their loss dropped their record down to 0-14.
Things could have been worse for Blackville-Hilda, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 69-55 loss to Wagener-Salley in their previous meeting back in January of 2023. Can Blackville-Hilda avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
