The R.J. Reynolds Demons will head out to square off against the South Davidson Wildcats at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. R.J. Reynolds has now lost nine straight, leaving the team hunting for their first win since March 19.
R.J. Reynolds came up short against Parkland on Wednesday, falling 19-3.
Carrie Martin was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing four bases while going 2-for-2. The team also got some help courtesy of Ja'Mese Allen, who scored a run and stole two bases.
Meanwhile, South Davidson never let their opponents score on Wednesday. They were the clear victors by a 16-0 margin over Lexington. Considering the Wildcats' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
Payton Cook made a splash no matter where she played. She tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Those three hits gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, South Davidson got a massive performance out of Kacie Gordon, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Emma Starkweather also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
South Davidson has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games. As for R.J. Reynolds, their loss dropped their record down to 1-15.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. R.J. Reynolds has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like South Davidson struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.5 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
R.J. Reynolds suffered a grim 30-2 defeat to South Davidson when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Can the Demons avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
