Basketball Recap: Hylton Takes a Loss

Hylton was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss dating back to last season. They were five points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 52-47 heartbreaker at the hands of the Gar-Field Red Wolves. While losing is never fun, the Bulldogs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 290th, while the Red Wolves are ranked 70th).

When it comes to explaining why Hylton lost, don't look at Michael Sylla. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 18 points and 14 rebounds. That's the most points Sylla has posted since back in December of 2023. Marshall Scarborough Iv was another key player, putting up nine points.

Even though they lost, Hylton was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Gar-Field only racked up eight assists.

Gar-Field was led to victory by Jonathan Jason Bell and Elijhah Walden. Bell went 9 of 20 on his way to 25 points along with five boards and five steals, while Walden went 5 of 9 on his way to 14 points in addition to six rebounds and four steals. With that strong performance, Bell is now averaging an impressive 16.5 points per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Nasir Johnson, who posted five points.

Hylton's defeat dropped their record down to 0-4. As for Gar-Field, the win keeps them at an undefeated 4-0.

Hylton wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 52-50 loss against Freedom on the 13th. As for Gar-Field, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 69-53 victory against Woodbridge on the 13th.
