Canyon View has gone a perfect 4-0 against Buckeye recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Jaguars will venture away from home to square off against the Hawks at 6:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Canyon View has 14 straight wins, Buckeye has eight straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Canyon View is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Arizona's top teams: Liberty, who was ranked 13th at the time (Canyon View was ranked tenth). The Jaguars' pitcher stepped up to hand the Lions a 6-0 shutout on Wednesday. Considering the Jaguars have won 17 contests by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Not much got past Landon Hood, who gave up just six hits and racked up seven Ks to keep Liberty off the board. Hood has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Brock Berlan, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI. That's the most doubles he has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Ricardo Yuriar, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Buckeye lost 17-6 to Canyon View on Tuesday.
Maddox Villegas was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one double. That triple marked the first that he has hit this season. David Castaneda was another key player, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
Canyon View's victory was their seventh straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 25-4. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.6 runs on average over those games. As for Buckeye, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-16.
Buckeye's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Canyon View has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.9 hits per game. It's a different story for Buckeye, though, as they've been averaging 9.2 hits. Given Canyon View's sizable advantage in that area, the Hawks will need to find a way to close that gap.
Canyon View took their victory against Buckeye when the teams last played on Tuesday by a conclusive 17-6 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Jaguars since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
