The Thurston Colts will square off against the Canby Cougars at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Thurston is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.3 runs per game this season.
Last Tuesday, Thurston came up short against West Albany and fell 7-2. The Colts have struggled against the Bulldogs recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meeting.
Thurston saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kendall Miller, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Canby posted their closest victory since May 17, 2024 on Wednesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Bend, sneaking past 8-7. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Cougars.
Alli Hayzlett made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and four unearned) runs off six hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Katelyn Vissers, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one double. Another player making a difference was Ava Heckathorn, who scored a run while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
Canby kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Canby's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 4-3. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Thurston, their loss dropped their record down to 4-2.
Friday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Thurston hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .352. However, it's not like Canby struggles in that department as they've averaged .322. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
