Hickory Grove Christian has won four straight games at home, while Legion Collegiate Academy has won four straight on the road, but those streaks won't matter much on Tuesday. The Lions will welcome the Lancers at 4:30 p.m. Hickory Grove Christian is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
Hickory Grove Christian fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Concord Academy on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Eagles by a score of 4-3.
Brady Johnson was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out nine batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Nathan Dowdy made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-4 with three stolen bases and two runs. Another player making a difference was Von Pelow, who went 2-for-5 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.
Legion Collegiate Academy came out on top against Cherryville on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run sixth inning. The Lancers put the hurt on the Ironmen with a sharp 9-1 win. The result was nothing new for the Lancers, who have now won nine contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Charlie Bailey tossed a big game, pitching 6.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March.
On the hitting side, Griffin McKain was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. Justin Iannetto was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
Legion Collegiate Academy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .433. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in seven consecutive matchups.
Legion Collegiate Academy has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine games. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-8 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Hickory Grove Christian, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-12.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Hickory Grove Christian has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.9 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Legion Collegiate Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
