Baseball Recap: West Central Comes Up Short

West Central had lost four straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 6-8 to make it five. They fell just short of the North Newton Spartans by a score of 17-16. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Tuesday (14), the Trojans still had to take the loss.

Christian Hughes led a balanced group of hitters, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. He is becoming a predictor of West Central's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 3-7 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Teagan Holle, who went 1-for-5 with three runs and two RBI.

As for North Newton, their record now sits at 3-10. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted since April 15th.

On North Newton's side, Korbyn Haberlin made a big impact no matter where he played. He tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off four hits. Haberlin was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and one double. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, Preston Boezeman and Bryce Gibson did most of the damage at the plate: Boezeman got on base in four of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI, while Gibson went 3-for-5 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI. Those two doubles gave Gibson a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Joe Stalewski, who went 1-for-4 with three runs and one stolen base.

West Central has already played their next game, a 6-0 loss against North Miami on the 2nd. As for North Newton, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 6-2 defeat against Kankakee Valley on the 2nd.
