After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Needles, the Awaken Christian Lions were happy to have found some success on Friday. They came out on top against GV Christian by a score of 39-32. That's another feather in the cap for Awaken Christian, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.
Awaken Christian's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Katelynn Montello led the charge by dropping a double-double on 13 points and ten steals. Montello is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Phoenix Sharp, who scored 17 points along with nine blocks and five rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why GV Christian lost, one person who can't be blamed is Samantha Charron. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 17 points and 15 rebounds. That was a full 53.1% of GV Christian's points, marking the seventh time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Ceaulei Lamb was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with six rebounds.
Awaken Christian now has a winning record of 8-7. As for GV Christian, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-11 record this season.
Awaken Christian will be playing at home against American Heritage Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Nevada (American Heritage Academy is ranked 91st, while Awaken Christian is ranked 71st). GV Christian's road trip will continue as they head out to face Laughlin at 4:30 p.m. on January 23rd. Hopefully Laughlin focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up five last Tuesday.
