Morgantown has gone 8-2 against University recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Wednesday. The Mohigans will be playing in front of their home fans against the Hawks at 5:30 p.m. Morgantown is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.9 runs per game this season.
Morgantown is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: John Marshall, who was ranked 23rd at the time (Morgantown was ranked first). The Mohigans' pitcher stepped up to hand the Monarchs an 8-0 shutout on Tuesday. The Mohigans haven't had any issues with the Monarchs recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
Morgantown got a great performance from Lucas Shinn as he didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Shinn has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Slade Barton, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Those two hits gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kane Williams, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.
Morgantown hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, University played in-conference for the first time on Monday and got just the result they were looking for. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Wheeling Park, sneaking past 6-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Hawks have posted against the Patriots since March 22, 2023.
Devin Enos looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.
On the hitting side, Max Cash and Logan Waldo did most of the damage at the plate: Cash went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI, while Waldo went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run. That home run marked the first that Cash has launched this season. Noah Templeton was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI.
University's win bumped their record up to 5-10. As for Morgantown, their victory bumped their record up to 12-2.
Morgantown's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's contest. The Mohigans have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.2 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for University, though, as they've been averaging only 0.7 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Morgantown continue to outrun the ball?
Everything went Morgantown's way against University in their previous matchup back in March, as Morgantown made off with a 10-0 win. Will the Mohigans repeat their success, or do the Hawks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
