Pilgrim is 9-1 against Cranston West since May of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Patriots will take on the Falcons at 4:30 p.m. Pilgrim is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
Pilgrim is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: La Salle Academy, who was ranked first at the time (Pilgrim was ranked second). The Patriots fell just short of the Rams by a score of 7-6 on Thursday. The Patriots have struggled against the Rams recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost meeting.
Genna D'Amato led a balanced group of hitters, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Madison Tuirok, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Meanwhile, Cranston West fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against St. Raphael Academy on Sunday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Saints by a score of 2-1. Having soared to a lofty 13 runs in the game before, the Falcons couldn't push the score so high this time.
Mia Crudale spent all 7.2 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on seven hits.
At the plate, Cranston West saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mia Baffoni, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base. Baffoni is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games she's played.
The defeat snapped Cranston West's winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 11-7 record. As for Pilgrim, their loss dropped their record down to 15-2.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Monday. Pilgrim hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.6 home runs per game. However, it's not like Cranston West struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.6 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Pilgrim skirted past Cranston West 3-2 in their previous meeting back in April. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Patriots since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
