The Southport Cardinals's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their 11th straight loss. They were dealt a 65-35 defeat at the hands of Heritage Christian. While losing is never fun, Southport can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 359th, while Heritage Christian is ranked 163rd).
Southport's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Lorelei bennett, who scored 16 points along with seven rebounds, and Nola Linson who scored eight points along with six rebounds. That's the first time this season that bennett scored 15 or more points. Sophia Nguyen was another key contributor, scoring six points.
Southport bumped their record down to 1-14 with that defeat, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 26.8 points per game. As for Heritage Christian, the victory got them back to even at 7-7.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Southport will face off against Shelbyville at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Heritage Christian will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against Greenwood at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Greenwood is coming into the contest on a three-game losing streak.
