Southwestern recap Oct. 9, 2012
Chaparral was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after besting Murrieta Mesa. The Pumas came in at 24 in the state poll after placing at number 32 last week.
Vista Murrieta extended the longest winning streak in Southwestern this week by beating Temecula Valley, 58-14. This was the team's sixth consecutive win.
The Rams' dynamic duo of Chase Chambers and Khalil Sharpe proved tough for Chaparral to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Chambers threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns and Sharpe had 191 yards receiving. Gilbert Toves helped Murrieta Mesa's passing attack out by catching eight balls for 68 yards.
Zach McIntosh was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 51 yards on 10 carries as Great Oak fell to Ryan Tukua's team. Teammate Carson Luna added to the ground attack by rushing for 51 yards.
Justin Schaeffer's team's Chambers and Sharpe have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Chambers has thrown for 1908 yards this season, while Sharpe, a 6-foot-2 receiver, has 56 catches for 636 yards. The Pumas' Justin Harris leads the league in rushing yards with 764.
Two of the top units in Southwestern will face off this week when the Rams take on Murrieta Valley. Murrieta Mesa's offense has recorded 273 points this season, making them No. 1 in the league, while the Nighthawks have permitted only 30 on the year.
The Rams' Chambers is within 92 passing yards of surpassing 2,000 on the season coming into this week's game against Murrieta Valley.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Greg Ireland's team takes on Murrieta Mesa. As it stands, the Nighthawks are in second, while the Rams are in third.
Vista Murrieta took down the Golden Bears 58-14 last week, the largest margin of any game.
