Baseball Recap: Alma Takes a Loss

Alma started off well but failed to capitalize on an early lead against Ithaca. They fell just short of the Yellowjackets by a score of 16-15 on Friday. The Panthers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Yellowjackets apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2023.

Owen Seeley was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Seeley was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with three runs.

In other batting news, Rocco Holiday and Ethan Helinski stepped up to the plate in a big way. Holiday got on base in three of his five plate appearances with three RBI and two runs, while Helinski got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Holiday is becoming a predictor of Alma's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 7-8-1 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was RJ Bielaga, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI and one run.

This is the second loss in a row for Alma and nudges their season record down to 10-9-1. Those defeats can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.5 runs over those games. As for Ithaca, they have been performing well recently as they've won eight of their last ten contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 8-9 record this season.

Alma will square off against Chesaning at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Ithaca, they will challenge St. Louis at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Yellowjackets are facing the Sharks at the right time seeing as the Sharks are stuck on a three-game losing streak.
