The South Newton Rebels are taking a road trip to face off against the Delphi Community Oracles at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. South Newton has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the matchup with 16 straight defeats, while Delphi Community will come in with four straight wins.
South Newton made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Benton Central, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Rebels fell just short of the Bison by a score of 8-6 on Thursday. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
South Newton saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Aidan Mattox, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. Landen Schwartz was another, earning one run and two stolen bases.
Meanwhile, Delphi Community narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past Rossville 5-4.
Brett Huffman made a splash while hitting and pitching. He tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Delphi Community is 3-1 when he allows at most two earned runs, but 4-5 otherwise. Huffman was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Hunter Wandrei was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2024.
Delphi Community now has a winning record of 7-6. As for South Newton, their loss dropped their record down to 0-11.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. South Newton has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Delphi Community struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
South Newton suffered a grim 20-2 defeat to Delphi Community in their previous meeting back in April of 2019. Can the Rebels avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
