The Berne Union Rockets will take on the Hayes Pacers at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Berne Union is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 12.7 runs per game this season.
Having struggled with three defeats in a row, Berne Union turned things around against Harvest Prep on Thursday. They put the hurt on the Warriors with a sharp 24-3 victory. The Rockets might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine matchups by ten runs or more this season.
Reese Besco made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off nine hits. Besco was even better at the plate, getting on base in five of her six plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Rylee North, who got on base in five of her six plate appearances with four runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 2 runs per game. Another player making a difference was Josilyn Hedges, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three runs and two RBI.
Berne Union always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .647. They are a perfect 10-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, Hayes had already won 17 in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.4 runs) and they went ahead and made it 18 on Wednesday. They walked away with an 8-3 win over the Tigers.
Like Berne Union, Hayes also got a great game from a two-way player: Bronwynn Leighty. On the mound, she struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up three earned runs off three hits. Leighty has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI and one double. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Hayes let Grace Singleton and Laurel Day run wild. Singleton went 2-for-4 with one home run and two runs, while Day went 2-for-3 with two runs and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Evelyn Bowman, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Hayes' victory was their ninth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 20-1. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Berne Union, their victory bumped their record up to 12-9.
Saturday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Berne Union has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .521. However, it's not like Hayes struggles in that department as they've averaged .485. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
