The Bellevue East Chieftains struggled with assists on Saturday (Westview had eight more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Bellevue East was outmatched by Westview on the road and fell 77-49. While losing is never fun, Bellevue East can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 221st, while Westview is ranked 79th).
Despite the loss, Bellevue East saw an underclassman step up: TayJon Morton-Swift scored nine points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Morton-Swift has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Trey Tolbert, who scored seven points.
Leading Westview to victory were John Sims and Tayvin Murphy. Sims scored 16 points along with five assists and four steals, while Murphy scored 18 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Those five assists set a new season-high mark for him. The team also got some help courtesy of Tzyon Patterson, who scored nine points along with three steals.
Bellevue East's loss dropped their record down to 2-7. As for Westview, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Bellevue East and Creighton Prep will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 5th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Creighton Prep knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past seven matches -- so hopefully Bellevue East likes a good challenge. Westview and Elkhorn South will face off at 7:15 p.m. on January 4th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Hopefully Elkhorn South focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 on Saturday.
