DURHAM, N.C. -- USA Baseball and MaxPreps announced on Monday, the USA Baseball MaxPreps Pitcher and Player of the Week Award winners for the week of May 2, 2016, bringing national recognition to the top-performing high school athletes in the country.
Representing eight national regions, -- Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest and West -- players are selected based upon stats that are submitted to MaxPreps.com by coaches and team administrators. For players to be nominated each week, their coach must enter the athlete's game stats into MaxPreps by Sunday evening. High school coaches may obtain an access code to enter stats for their teams at
maxpreps.com.
The winners for USA Baseball MaxPreps Player of the Week Award are as follows:
Great LakesPitcher of the Week: Gavin Lyon threw a no-hitter for Westerville Central High School (Westerville, Ohio) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Great Lakes Pitcher of the Week. Lyon, a senior, struck out 11 batters and gave up three walks.
Player of the Week: Sam Crail hit .818 and scored nine runs for Sheridan High School (Sheridan, Ind.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Great Lakes Player of the Week. Crail, a junior, hit three home runs and tallied five RBIs.
Mid-AtlanticPitcher of the Week: Dylan Heid pitched a one-hit shutout for Great Valley High School (Malvern, Pa.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Mid-Atlantic Pitcher of the Week award. Heid, a senior, struck out 10 batters and gave up just two walks.
Player of the Week: Will Pyne hit two home runs for DeMatha Catholic High School (Hyattsville, Md.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Mid-Atlantic Player of the Week award. Pyne, a senior, went 5-for-6 with two runs scored and seven RBIs. He finished the week with an .857 on-base percentage.
MidwestPitcher of the Week: James Boatwright pitched a complete-game no-hitter for Atchison High School (Atchison, Kan.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Midwest Pitcher of the Week award. Boatwright, a senior, struck out 17 batters and gave up just three walks.
Player of the Week: Bailey Sites went 12-for-16 for Spearville High School (Spearville, Kan.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Midwest Player of the Week award. Sites, a sophomore, scored 15 runs and tallied nine RBIs. He finished the week with five walks and an on-base percentage of .846.
NortheastPitcher of the Week: Mike Zaino struck out 11 batters for West Canada Valley Central School (Newport, N.Y.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Northeast Pitcher of the Week. Zaino, a senior, pitched seven innings of shutout baseball and surrendered just two hits and one walk.
Player of the Week: Mo Gomez slugged 2.333 on the week for Lincoln High School (Jersey City, N.J.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Northeast Player of the Week. Gomez, a junior, hit .833 with two home runs and six RBIs.
NorthwestPitcher of the Week: Zane Phelps pitched an eight-inning perfect game for Bayfield High School (Bayfield, Colo.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Northwest Pitcher of the Week award. Phelps, a senior, struck out 16 of the 24 batters he faced.
Player of the Week: Nate Sweeney tallied nine RBIs for Cherry Creek High School (Greenwood Village, Colo.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Northwest Player of the Week award. Sweeney, a senior, hit .857 with six runs scored, two walks, and two home runs. He finished the week with a 2.285 slugging percentage.
SoutheastPitcher of the Week: Logan Allen struck out 12 batters in six innings for University High School (Orange, Fla.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Southeast Pitcher of the Week. Allen, a junior, gave up three hits and one walk in the victory.
Player of the Week:
Garrett Gooden hit .667 with five RBIs for St. Pius X Catholic High School (Atlanta, Ga.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Southeast Player of the Week. Gooden, a senior, hit three home runs and finished the week with a 2.166 slugging percentage.
SouthwestPitcher of the Week: Zack Gallegos pitched a complete-game no-hitter for Questa High School (Questa, N.M.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Southwest Pitcher of the Week award. Gallegos, a senior, struck out 10 batters and surrendered just one walk.
Player of the Week: Jordan Salas hit three home runs for Cooper High School (Lubbock, Texas) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Southwest Player of the Week award. Salas, a senior, went 6-for-7 with six RBIs and one walk. He finished the week with a 2.428 slugging percentage.
WestPitcher of the Week: Grant Ford threw a no-hitter for Pioneer High School (San Jose, Calif.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps West Pitcher of the Week. Ford, a senior, struck out 10 batters and walked three for the win.
Player of the Week: Hugo Mendoza hit .889 for Beatty High School (Beatty, Nev.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps West Player of the Week. Mendoza, a senior, hit one home run and finished the week with 12 RBIs.
